CONCEITO

Virtual Reality and Podcast

The magic realism embedded in this century-old maritime culture is brought to life through evocative audio spatial recorded songs and sounds coming from the sea, 360 projections on the sail inside the dhow and on the sea  around it, and a final live-action 360 VR headset experience.

The Nakhodha VR/XR experience is a climate change story told through a lovechanting affair between a dhow sailor and a mermaid.

Audio spatial recorded chants of men and women of the fishing community and underwater sounds in the 360 sound headsets, along with 360 video mapping projected live-action images, are the backdrop scenario of the encounter of a sailor fisherman with an invisible sea creature under the "Al Suhail" (the sail) star constellation.

As the narrative unfolds, the user experiences the initiation process of the sailor fisherman becoming a Nakhodha, a sea wisdom keeper with special vision and hearing abilities who earns his special captain seat at the back of the dhow. As the final component of the experience, towards the end after some completed stages, the user also “earns” the Nakhodha's seat through a virtual reality headset where he can see and hear what no one else can.

The VR headset is used as a window to the wise magical world of the Nakhodha, part of the cultural heritage of the Swahili coast, and his deep connection to the mermaid which represents the spiritual world of nature. Tragically, this cultural heritage universe is at risk because of the rapid rising sea level, and in the end, it gets completely submersed, implicating us all.

This immersive experience will be launched in June 2023.
